Q: What is the difference between the Acne-Statin Kit and the Acne-Statin System?
A: Acne-Statin Kit and System combines the use of the Acne-Statin Kit and Dr. Karr’s Sopstitute, which gives you an added benefit: protecting the skin from secondary bacterial infection due to EXCORIATION, which frequently occurs when one scratches a pimple (sometimes unintentionally, such as while sleeping), or breaks the pimple while shaving. Therefore, Sopstitute, by preventing secondary bacterial infection of the lesion, helps the healing process. You can purchase Sopstitute alone, but if you purchase it with the Kit, you get the Sopstitute for half price. For more information on Sopstitute, Click Here.
Q: Why is Acne-Statin a REVOLUTIONARY product?
A: Well, in 1975, Dr. Karr introduced to the market a new concept in the treatment, care and control of acne. For decades the anti-acne market (OTC and prescribed medications) was monopolized by drying, peeling, irritating agents. Dr. Karr’s product was 180 degrees opposite from the prevailing products on the market. By providing the public with a new product that did not dry, irritate, or peel, but on the contrary, moisturized and kept the skin, soft, moist, and smooth went against the conventional anti-acne market that included drying and peeling agents in their products. Acne-Statin caused quite a stir in the dermatological community and amongst the pharmaceutical companies that produced the products they prescribed.
By providing the public with a new product that did not dry, irritate, or peel, but on the contrary, moisturized and kept the skin, soft, moist, and smooth, Dr. Karr’s Acne-Statin went against the conventional anti-acne market which consisted of drying and peeling products. And of course, it also went against the prevailing theory that in order to treat acne, you have to dry and peel the skin. Acne-Statin caused quite a stir in the dermatological community and amongst the pharmaceutical companies that produced the products that the dermatologists prescribed.
Acne-Statin does not cause any adverse side effects, is gentle to the skin, does not irritate the eyes, and does not cause sun sensitivity. It is a cleanser/moisturizer lotion in one bottle. It is greaseless, odorless and vanishing. It doesn’t have any perfumes to cover any medicinal smell, because there isn’t any. It is water-soluble and rinses with water. It can be kept on the skin all day and all night. It doesn’t itch and keeps skin soft, moist, and radiant. It diminishes pores and wrinkles and it is also safe to use during pregnancy. As one customer wrote, “Acne-Statin is a healthy complexion in a bottle” - that leaves no tell tale signs.
In the last few years, some companies have started advertising products containing exfoliating ingredients, but to lessen the irritation, they immerse them in creams. Dr. Karr’s products are still revolutionary because they are still the only truly hypoallergenic, non-irritating anti-acne products on the market, with a track record of 25 years.
Acne-Statin customers still order the product and they claim their skin is flawless. They are using Acne-Statin as maintenance to prevent breakouts and to keep their skin clear, healthy, smooth, soft, and younger-looking. There are many customers who have used Acne-Statin for fifteen years or more and claim that it has given them miraculous results and kept them looking younger.
Q: Why wasn’t Acne-Statin advertised from 1981-91?
A: In 1979 Dr. Karr agreed to sign an FTC consent order because in it, the FTC said that she would be able to advertise that Acne-Statin was efficacious (that it worked), only if she had two double-blind studies that were to be performed by two independent dermatologist qualified in the field of acne. These terms has been advised by the five dermatologist “consultants” who had complained in the first place.
Dr. Karr agreed knowing that Acne-Statin was efficacious, not only because of her own studies, but also by the thousands of letters that customers had sent her. (People would not send money to reorder a product again and again if it did not work for them.) Dr. Karr’s clinical studies on her own patients were declared by the dermatologists as “not objective” and the hundreds of customer letters that Dr. Karr gave to the FTC, who in turn gave them to the dermatologist consultants were declared by the dermatologists as “anecdotal” and therefore didn’t count. (This declaration was insulting to those customers who saw dramatic results after using Acne-Statin and saw clear skin and a flawless complexion when they looked in the mirror – one wrote “if you don’t send it to me, I will die.”)
Two years later, in 1981, Dr. Karr sent the results of the double-blind clinical studies, both the statistical results and the patients’ charts (raw data) to the FTC, who then turned them over to the five consulting dermatologists. After seeing the excellent results, these dermatologists knew that the FTC would have to let Dr. Karr advertise the fact that Acne-Statin was indeed a very efficacious product. They then provided the FTC with a new dermatologist consultant (who remained anonymous to Dr. Karr) to evaluate the results.
This anonymous dermatologist (The FTC refused to divulge his name to Dr. Karr) rejected the results (“on its face”) while admitting that he didn’t even look at the raw data. Thus, based on this anonymous dermatologist’s rejection, the FTC decreed that Dr. Karr did not have scientific substantiation for efficacy and therefore, she could not say in her ads that the product worked or else she would be in violation of the consent order and subjected to fines. She could say that people loved the product, but she could not say why.
Dr. Karr thought it was pointless to advertise the product if she could not say that it worked, so between 1981 and 1991, she only supplied the product to people who had heard about it previously (in 1977, when she was advertising) and were reordering and people who had heard about the product from friends.
Q: What can I expect when I start using Acne-Statin Kit?
A: The redness (erythema) will disappear within a few days. The existing blemishes will start to reduce in size and will start to resolve within three to six weeks. The pores will be cleansed and some of you may experience a temporary flare-up of the acne. This is a sign that your treatment is working, not that your acne is getting worse
Q: What is happening during the flare-up (cleansing) period? Is the flare-up necessary?
A: In order to prevent future breakouts, the canal and the pore have to be cleared of impactions (plugs). Only then you won’t have to worry about breakouts and having undependable skin that breaks out when you least expect it, like before an important date. Prior to the use of the Acne-Statin Kit, the emergence of the plug is usually sporadic - every now and then. The plugs are called comedones and they will turn into whiteheads and blackheads before becoming pimples. This cleansing period could be called the “working through period” since the plugs in the canals work themselves towards the pore and come out to be resolved and washed away. The plugs (comedones) are drawn out and pushed to the surface of the skin where they become visible. This is a sign that your treatment is working, not that your acne is getting worse. This is temporary and is experienced with some other acne products (i.e. Retin-A and Accutane.).
The cleansing period could happen after the first two weeks or sometimes at the end of the second month. It depends on the position of the plugs - whether they are close to the bottom of the canal or close to the pore – as well as products that you used prior to Acne-Statin Kit. Do not get discouraged. Be patient. Some other acne treatments have a flare-up period, but by using the Acne-Statin Kit, at least your skin won’t be irritated. Some people experience only a slight flare-up or none at all. Letters 18-22 on the “Testimonials” page detail customer experiences with this “flare-up” period and their flawless skin after the cleansing process is complete.
As long as you continue to use the Acne-Statin Kit as maintenance to prevent new plugs from forming, you will have more dependable skin, your acne will be under control and you will have a feeling of freedom.
Q: Does Acne-Statin contain benzoyl peroxide or Retin-A? What about animal products?
A: No, Acne-Statin Kit does not contain benzoyl peroxide, Retin-A, or animal products. It also does not contain retinal, cortisone, alcohol, sulphur, resorcinol, soaps, detergents, wax, lanolin, or alpha-hydroxy acids.
Q: Can I use Acne-Statin Kit with other anti-acne products?
A: No. You would not get the intended results. Acne-Statin is specially formulated to be used by itself, and it works by itself. Since Acne-Statin is a cleanser, moisturizer and acne treatment all in one, you don’t need any other products.
Q: How do I use the Acne-Statin Kit?
A: Follow these instructions carefully for best results. You will find two kinds of bottles in the Kit. There are two 4 oz. bottles of the hypoallergenic cleanser/moisturizer lotion (CML - blue label) and one 4 oz. bottle of acne-treatment cream (ACTC – orange label).
In the morning (after washing face with the CML), apply approximately a dime-sized amount of ACTC to the affected area. (Use only once a day)
If you have dry skin:
Apply ACTC every other day or twice a week or just to individual blemishes (use your own judgment). The use of the CML between applications of ACTC will help reduce the drying effects of ACTC.
If you have oily skin:
You can reverse the schedule and leave the ACTC on all night and use the CML during the day as a moisturizer or as a base under powder. Do not use the ACTC immediately after steaming your face. Wait until the skin is cool and then apply the ACTC.
The Acne-Treatment Cream is a mild exfoliate. It contains 0.5% salicylic acid in a hypoallergenic base. The purpose of the salicylic acid is to exfoliate the dead cells covering the pores, so naturally, some drying may occur. Exfoliation (shedding) of the upper most layer of dead cells helps unclog pores. A new layer of cells will replace the old one, and your skin will have a fresher more radiant look. The FDA (Federal Drug Administration) has determined that salicylic acid is safe and effective in the treatment of acne.
SENSITIVITY TEST FOR NEW USERS:
Apply the product sparingly to a small affected area for the first three days. A small percentage of people may be allergic to Acne-Statin Kit. They may be allergic to the preservatives in the Kit (the parabens) or to the salicylic acid. An allergic reaction usually occurs within the first three days. The symptoms of an allergic reaction to the Acne-Statin Kit are ITCING AND/OR BURNING SENSATION ACCOMPANIED BY REDNESS.
ALLERGIC REACTION:
If an itching and/or burning sensation accompanied by redness occurs, you might be allergic to the product. Rinse with room temperature water and discontinue use. This reaction is reversible. To return the product, follow the instructions regarding our refund policy located under “Our Guarantee” on this website. An allergic reaction is not to be confused with the temporary flare-up period (cleansing period), which occurs as a result of plugs coming out of the pores. The cleansing period usually (but not always) occurs after the first two weeks or during the second or third month and is not associated with an itching or burning sensation. (For more information on the cleansing period, see the FAQ’s section.) If you suspect that you are experiencing an allergic reaction and are not sure, just call our Customer Service Department for a consultation at
