Here are two photographs (A and B) of two petri dishes. Both photographs are from the same facial area of the same patient. The culture media in both petri dishes is blood agar (a common media that is used to grow pathological bacteria in bacteriological tests).

In photograph “A”, the patient washed his face twice daily, in the morning and the evening for five consecutive days with pure ivory soap and rinsed with water. On the fifth day, he washed his face at 6 a.m. and drove to his air-conditioned office.* At 2 p.m., he walked two blocks to the Beverly Hills Clinical Laboratory to have the culture taken [the above picture is after incubation].

*The patient was a psychoanalyst and did not come in contact with patients with infectious diseases.
